POSITION SUMMARY 

The Horticulturalist designs, plans, organizes, coordinates, and participates in planting and maintenance of trees, shrubs, annuals, perennials and turf. Performs regular inspections for insect, weed and disease problems with knowledge of chemical applications. Designs, installs and maintains irrigation systems for annuals, trees, shrubs. Will perform routine park grounds and equipment maintenance and repair duties as needed. Assists in emergency operations, including snow removal as required. The Horticulturalist reports to the Assistant Parks Manager.

 

Job Responsibilities (Include, but not limited to)

  • Designs, installs and maintains flowering beds made up of both perennial and annual plants by planting plant materials, mulching, fertilizing, watering, applying pesticides, pruning and removing dead plant materials and weed
  • Assists Director of Parks and Recreation in solicitation of bid estimates and project specifications
  • Installs holiday decorations within pots and appropriate areas as directed by parks director
  • Designs and maintains tree plantings to include pruning, mulching, fertilizing, pesticide applications and identifying dead/decayed trees for removal. Coordinates with Public Works Department for tree removal
  • Designs, installs and maintains irrigation systems for annuals, trees, shrubs and turf areas
  • Assists in preparing applications for grants, certifications and other miscellaneous City tree and/or flower recognition programs
  • Coordinates with other city departments, boards or commissions on joint ventures
  • Keeps abreast of current research on techniques for plant production, landscape planting and maintenance and pest control, through professional associations, publications, workshops and seminars
  • Maintains records of crop information including quantity, variety, daily and weekly growing conditions, pest control, fertilizer application, and soil test results
  • Performs customer service duties, including assisting visitors, set up, operation and take down of event equipment and supplies
  • Assists in ensuring a safe environment for visitors and general public. Identifies safety hazards and informs supervisor of hazards. Recommends and takes corrective action
  • Removes snow from walkways and driveways utilizing hand shovel and/or snow blower. Assists in City emergency operations, including snow removal as required
  • Perform routine maintenance and repairs related to parks equipment, facilities, and green space

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associates’ degree in Horticulture, Botany, or related field of study, or an equivalent combination of formal education and work experience
  • Possession of a Commercial Pesticide Applicators license (A and B) or ability to obtain within 6 months from date of hire
  • Possession of a valid state driver’s license
  • Must successfully pass a background check and physical.


Physical Demands / Work Environment

Tasks involve the ability to exert moderate but not constant physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling objects and materials of moderate weight, 20-30 pounds and heavier weight with the use of proper equipment.

Work is primarily performed outside with exposure to extreme temperatures. Employee may be exposed to varying noise levels in the environment such as noise from operating vehicles, equipment and/or tools. Tasks may risk exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, electric currents and toxic/poisonous agents.


Pay and Benefits 

$20.24 - $34.05 per hour depending on qualifications.
