As a Civil Engineer in our Traffic Services Division, you'll play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Overland Park. You'll be at the forefront of planning project locations, leveraging funding, selecting top-tier consultants, reviewing construction plans, and managing projects from preliminary design through to completion. Your expertise will directly influence the development and maintenance of City Design Criteria, Specifications, and Standard Details.

Responsibilities:

  • Manages the design and construction of traffic engineering projects and assists with the traffic aspects of roadway and stormwater projects.
  • Reviews consultant-produced engineering plans for new construction involving construction or installation of traffic signals, streetlights, fiber optic communication systems, signs and pavement markings, and work zone traffic controls.
  • Prepares in-house design plans, specifications, and contract documents for capital or maintenance-related traffic engineering projects that comply with Overland Park Municipal Codes and Standard Details.
  • Perform various traffic studies such as speed studies, traffic signal warrants, vehicle crash data analysis, intersection sight distance, etc., and make recommendations for improvements.
  • Evaluates requests from citizens regarding the installation of traffic calming measures. Oversees data collection efforts including turning movement counts, average annual daily traffic (AADT) volumes, spot speed studies, license plate surveys, and other studies as needed.
  • Responds to public inquiries on traffic concerns and general traffic engineering information. Discusses concerns with residents.
  • Assists the Supervisory Civil Engineer in updating the approved materials list, standard details, design guide wiki information, etc. for traffic signals, streetlighting, and pavement marking and signing.
  • Operates computer hardware and software, including Highway Capacity Software, AutoCAD, AGi32 Streetlighting Design software, ArcGIS, Bluebeam, Sign CAD, Google suite software, Microsoft suite software, etc., and various spreadsheets and in-house computer programs to assist in the administration of the Overland Park Municipal Codes. Maintains databases and reviews available hardware and software development to enhance traffic engineering operations.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor, or Master’s degree in civil engineering with an emphasis in traffic or transportation engineering.
  • Professional Engineer registration in the state of Kansas or another state currently with Kansas registration within twelve months of employment.
  • Possession of Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) certification preferred.
  • Possession of an appropriate valid drivers license. Must maintain an insurable driving record.
  • Six or more years of traffic engineering experience including project management, negotiating, and contract development or equivalent experience.


No City residency requirement.

Must successfully pass a background check, drug screen, and physical exam.

Normal Work Schedule: 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., Mon.-Fri.

Salary Range: Sr Grade J $87,598.55 - $120,886.45
