The Staff Engineer works under the general supervision of the Deputy Director of Water Utilities. This position represents the interests of the Department through interactions with the Public Works Engineering Division, engineering consultants, project related contractors, other water and sewer utilities, and developers.  This position is responsible for asset management, coordinating and monitoring capital improvement projects, performing periodic plan reviews,  collects and evaluates data regarding the water and wastewater systems, project management, provides engineering support to utility operations, prepares and delivers public presentations and may interact with elected and appointed officials, city staff, utility customers and other interested parties. 


Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in civil engineering or a closely related field
  • EIT Certificate
  • One (1) year of experience preferred
  • Valid state Motor Vehicle Operator’s license and acceptable driving record required
  • Skills in engineering design, analysis and calculations
  • Skills in technical writing and correspondence and ability to communicate orally with consulting engineers, contractors, developers, the public, city staff and elected officials
  • Skills in project management administration, general understanding of contracts, and the ability to interpret construction contracts and specifications
  • General knowledge of state and federal regulations pertaining to the water/wastewater industry
  • Thorough knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in wastewater collection and water distribution systems
  • Knowledge of asset management, condition assessment, and evaluation studies
  • Knowledge of sewer and water pipe installation and repair  
  • Knowledge of pump station design and trouble shooting
  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments, service providers and the public
  • Ability to analyze technical information and identify solutions
  •  Ability to organize data collection activities
  • Basic understanding of surveying
  • Personal computer skills including word processing, spreadsheet and data base
