
I.T. Specialist - Police Department
POSITION SUMMARY
This is a highly technical position monitoring and maintaining the Police Department’s information technology (IT) systems. This position is responsible for the performance and availability of hardware, operating systems, networks, and application software that defines the Police Department’s IT systems. The position involves frequent, direct internal contacts within the department and with other City departments, and frequent, direct external contacts with vendors. This position is required in office Monday through Friday, hours can be flexible, but will be a minimum 40 hours a week.
Job Responsibilities (Include, but not limited to)
- Installs and maintains the Police Department’s computer systems. (MDTs, IN Car Video, eTicket, Communication Center systems, BWCs, Milestone system, NICE system, LPR, desktop computers, CJIS, LiveScan, cloud and on Prem systems, multifactor authentication, fax, voice over IP, and additional systems.
- Is the liaison for the Police Department’s IT systems with the City’s IT personnel
- Installs, maintains, and monitors the Police Department’s firewalls, virtual private networks, file server, user authentication server, domain name servers, wireless access points, security cameras, Thernet and fiber switches, printers and phone systems
- Ensures Information Systems back-up and recovery are in place. Performs back-up procedures
- Implements and maintains Information System security, user access and data integrity
- Identifies and resolves problems with hardware and software using remote monitoring and management software.
- Assists in the completion of end user Information Systems requests and problems
- Troubleshoots desktop or end user hardware and software problems ranging from typical to most difficult.
- Implements new programs and operating systems. Installs and sets up personal computers and new equipment, properly configuring new hardware and software for the Police Department's system
- Informs and trains staff on necessary upgrades
- Evaluates vendor products in IS hardware and software. Recommends purchases consistent with the organization's short and long-term objectives
- Acts as the Custodian of records for all digital media
- Acts as the Local Agency Security Officer (L.A.S.O)
- Performs related duties as requested or assigned
Minimum Qualifications
- Associate’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a closely related field
- Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in IT support, systems administration, or network management
- CompTIA Network+, Security+, and A+
- CJIS Certification (or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire)
- Valid driver's license
- Must successfully pass background and reference checks
Preferred
- Bachelor’s Degree in in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a closely related field
- Microsoft Certified: Windows Server/Modern Desktop Administrator
- Experience supporting law enforcement systems
Physical Demands and Work Environment
Requires the ability to operate standard office equipment, machinery and tools such as computer terminal, calculator and/or materials used in performing essential functions.
Requires the ability to hear, speak, and coordinate eyes, hands, fingers, feet and limbs in performing movements requiring moderate skill, such as typing. Tasks may involve extended periods at a keyboard, telephone or workstation.
Tasks involve the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but may involve some standing, walking, climbing, stooping, lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling of objects weighing forty pounds.
Requires the ability to recognize and identify individual characteristics of shapes and sounds, associated with job-related objects, materials and tasks
The work is performed in both office and field settings, including secure areas within the Police Department, such as the Communications Center, evidence room, and patrol vehicle bays. Regular use of computers, servers, and networking equipment in various physical environments, including equipment rooms, wiring closets, and vehicle interiors. The position requires frequent interaction with police personnel, City IT staff, and outside vendors. On-call availability is expected for after-hours or emergency IT issues, particularly those affecting mission-critical law enforcement systems.
Pay and Benefits
$53,767 - $86,013/year depending on qualifications.
