
City Management intern
POSITION SUMMARY

The Management Intern is a temporary classification with a one-year standard length of assignment which provides professional-level staff assistance in analytical and statistical research work required for a Master's in Business Administration, Finance, Economics, Accounting, and Public Administration. Responsibilities require contact with the general public, City Council and officials, and multiple city departments. Working under the immediate supervision of the City Manager's staff, standard assignments are well defined and initially are reviewed as work proceeds; however, as the intern's competence increases, work is done more independently and reviewed upon completion and/or during conferences. Duties may also require the employee to be available for morning and evening meetings. The intern’s interests and goals will be taken into account for projects.
Job Responsibilities (Include, but not limited to)
- Assist the City Administrator’s Office in researching high-level issues of concern as they arise
- Assist with creating the City’s Annual Report/Budget
- Assists with administrative projects as required or directed to include work with outside agencies, department divisions, and City Departments to optimize project delivery
- Research, create, and present revenue forecast, expenditure cost analyses on a monthly basis
- Research economic development strategies for growth and support of Grandview businesses
- Performs entry level program analysis, organizational and administrative field studies, and statistical analysis of research data
- Report findings of research or study to the City Administrator or other executive staff and elected officials in writing and in person
- Provides exceptional customer service by responding to information requests, conducting research, providing solutions to problems, and correcting errors
- All other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
Working on a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in public administration, business administration, political science, engineering, finance or other professional field. One or more years of prior part time work experience in an administrative or office setting is highly desirable. This position will benefit a first year, current Master of Public Administration degree student needing internship experience to complete their degree program, or any graduate interested in experiencing work in the public sector. The successful candidate must also pass a background check and drug screen.
The successful applicant will be self-motivated and able to take on new challenges with enthusiasm. This position is designed to develop the leadership and technical skills of the intern while providing the City with highly capable staff support. Former interns have served in positions such as city manager, financial analyst, and human resources.
Physical/Environmental Demands
- Mobility to work in a standard office environment, use standard office equipment and attend off-site meetings
- On an intermittent basis, sit at a desk for long periods of time; intermittently walk, stand, bend, squat, twist, and reach while performing office duties
- Manual dexterity to use standard office equipment and supplies
- Vision to read handwritten and printed material and a computer screen; hearing and speech to communicate in person and by telephone
- Ability to lift and carry items weighing up to 25 pounds such as files, manuals, or equipment.
Work is performed in an office environment and is subject to frequent interruptions; daily interaction with the City’s various department teams and the general public. May be exposed to highly stressful situations and individuals who are irate or hostile. Occasional driving is required to attend special meetings at various City facilities, training sites, and public and private events.
