Parade of Hearts unveils 2024 art pieces — Last month, the Parade of Hearts unveiled its 2024 collection, featuring 100 heart sculptures by local artists. The hearts will be displayed across the metro area until August. View the hearts.

 

Parkville among cities named as having America’s most charming main streets — Parkville ranks No. 68 on the list of “America’s Most Charming Main Streets” from the photo company Mixbook. The city was recognized for its proximity to the Missouri River and the historic train depot found on Main Street. Read more from KCTV5.

 

Basehor debuts new city hall — On April 16, Basehor introduced its new 9,000-square-foot city hall, which includes public and city administration spaces and a city council chamber. Located north of the Basehor Community Library, the campus will offer a playground, trails, an event lawn and additional civic facilities. Learn more and view the building.

 

Kansas City International Airport wins consumer experience awards — The concession program at Kansas City International’s new terminal has garnered several national awards in its first year of operation. The new MCI airport took home awards in the Medium/Small Airports division for Best Overall Program; Best Local Inspired Restaurant for the Kansas City BBQ Experience; Best Casual Dining Concept for Brown & Loe and Best Passenger Service for Directors Cut Take II. AXN’s Airport Experience Awards is one of the largest gatherings of commercial airport executives and concession operators in North America. KU Emerging Leaders Academy opens registration — The Emerging Leaders Academy is now accepting applicants for its program focused on leadership in public service. The program offers a curriculum that builds practical skills for immediate application and long-term success to meet the needs of communities and constituents. Register now.

 

KC APWA hosting small city panel — The KC Metro Chapter of the American Public Works Association (APWA) created a Small Cities/Rural Communities Committee specifically for communities under 50,000 residents. They are hosting a panel discussion with area public works directors from smaller communities on Tuesday, May 7. View more information.

Update to stormwater management manual — Excessive stormwater can create many challenges for cities. The “Manual of Best Management Practices for Stormwater Quality,” a guide to managing stormwater issues, is being updated by MARC and the KC chapter of the American Public Works Association. The revised manual is expected to be completed by spring 2025, with subsequent training events planned. Learn more about the project and view the old manual.

 

Regional Assembly and Leadership Awards — The 2024 Regional Assembly and Leadership Awards, MARC’s premier annual event, will honor the Kansas City, Missouri, Aviation Department; Gloria Ortiz-Fisher of Westside Housing Organization; Julie Lorenz, former Kansas secretary of transportation; and Carolyn Wells from Liberty Hospital. The event will be at the Sheraton Hotel at Crown Center on June 14 from 11 a.m.–1 p.m. Learn more about the award recipients and register today!

 

KC Ready resource fair for emergency preparedness — The KC Ready Resource Fair will be held on Friday, May 10, 2024, at the World War I Memorial in Penn Valley Park from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Throughout the day, homeland security and law enforcement professionals will share information on the risks, who is vulnerable, the role we all play in keeping our communities safe and what to do in case you find yourself in an incident. This event is free and open to businesses, faith-based organizations, nonprofits, schools and any others who have an interest in preparing for and responding to threats. Register now.

 

Regional election security workshop — A workshop on election security, stressing the need for interagency collaboration, will be hosted by Missouri election officials and RHSCC on Thursday, May 30 at iWerx in North Kansas City from 10 a.m.–1 p.m. Participants will gain practical experience in applying their knowledge and skills to address specific threats. Next call for Planning Sustainable Places (PSP) projects now open — The PSP efforts work to advance detailed local planning and project development activities that further the creation of vibrant, connected and green places. The program will be seeking projects to fund which continue the work of the Creating Sustainable Places initiative and the region’s long-range plan for sustainable development. There will be a pre-application workshop on May 16, 2024, at 1 p.m. The project submission deadline is June 14, 2024, at 4 p.m. Learn more.

 

Storm damage (Missouri communities) — MARC was contacted by a member of the congressional delegation to determine if any communities experienced damage over the last few days of storms. Applications open for ICMA peer learning cohort — The ICMA invites local governments to apply for the 2024 Economic Mobility and Opportunity Peer Learning Cohort and grant program. Selected local governments will receive $20,000 grants for the implementation of an economic mobility assessment, planning or engagement process, or other local activity as part of their participation in the cohort. Applications are open until May 10. Learn more and apply.

 

Impact of collaboration on North Carolina — North Carolina’s Office of Strategic Partnerships, established five years ago, has successfully fostered collaboration between governments, universities and philanthropies to address common challenges. Learn more.
