Summary
To diagnose and perform maintenance and repair on a wide range of city vehicles, mechanical and motorized equipment, lawn and garden equipment, off-road machinery, snow removal equipment by ensuring the safe and efficient operation of city equipment and vehicles across multiple departments. This role involves various skilled and semi-skilled automotive and equipment repairs, encompassing automobiles, trucks, and select heavy equipment.

Equipment Maintenance and Repair
- Maintain, inspect, repair, and replace worn or broken equipment, vehicle, and truck parts; perform regular preventative maintenance tasks; perform diagnostic tests as appropriate; provide mechanical knowledge in the repair of trucks and related construction and safety equipment.
- Repair and replace components including generators, distributors, relays, lights, switches, and high voltage light systems; repair, adjust and replace brake systems including wheel cylinders, master cylinders, disc pads, hydraulic and air brakes.
- Weld, fabricate and assemble parts and equipment for automotive and heavy equipment; fabricate, modify, and repair body chassis parts; weld, braze, solder, and cut steel, stainless steel, and aluminum by torch and mig welder; sandblast truck beds, plows, and wheels.
- Diagnose, maintain, and repair electrical systems components, ignition systems, alternators, high voltage power generators, starters, and batteries; diagnosis, maintain, repair, and recondition hydraulic systems.
- Replace component parts on vehicles and equipment; perform safety inspections on equipment.
- Install radios, emergency lighting systems and special equipment for police, public works and parks and recreation vehicles.
- General Maintenance & Emergency Response
- Drive all types of city vehicles as needed for testing, field service, or deliveries.
- Responds to service work and related problems that may occur after hours, on weekends, call back for snow events and during holidays.
- Responsible for the general maintenance and cleaning of shop building.
- Maintenance Analysis & Operations
- Analyze failures, determine problems, and causes, and recommend solutions.
- Perform preventative maintenance on equipment including lubricating and replacing worn parts.
- Operate shop machinery including grinders, welding equipment, and a variety of power and hand tools.
- Recycle appropriate fluids, filters and materials including oil and refrigerants; safely dispose of materials and fluids non-recyclable.
- Fleet Management & Budgeting
- Maintain the Vehicle and Equipment Replacement Program (VERP) by analyzing miles and hours and maintenance service records to recommend replacement cycle modifications.
- Assist the Department Director in the preparation of the Fleet Maintenance annual budget.
- Responsible for preparing fuel reports that are used in billing internal and external customers. Work with fuel vendor to ensure that unleaded gasoline and diesel tanks are filled regularly.
- Supply & Inventory Management
- Purchase equipment maintenance parts and materials; participate in the development of specifications; order a variety of supplies including tools, safety equipment, shop equipment, vehicle and equipment parts and chemicals, receive bids; maintain inventory of supplies and equipment.
- Vendor Coordination & Record Keeping
- Prepare work order for contract mechanic work for major engine, transmission, and brake repairs; receive bids; deliver vehicles to vendors for major repair work and installation of special equipment; pick up and inspect work of vendors to ensure completion; maintain records of work performed.
- Maintain detailed records for recording all repairs and service history of vehicles. Use computerized fleet management software/system to track equipment/vehicle maintenance and history. Input necessary data, as needed.

- Proactively support city’s and department’s strategic goals and functions ensuring community’s needs are met.
- Maintain a positive work atmosphere by working and communicating in a manner to get along with internal customers, supervisor, and external vendors.

Essential Knowledge, Experience, and Ability
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- A minimum of three (3) years’ experience in the maintenance and repair of auto, medium and heavy-duty trucks, and construction equipment.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification(s).
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate degree in automotive technology or related field.
- Missouri Inspector Mechanical License.
- Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A with acceptable driving record.

- The primary duties of this position are performed in a repair and maintenance shop environment.
- Regularly exposed to fumes, odors, gasoline, solvents, cleaners, oils, and other related liquids.
- Exposure to inclement weather when conducting field repairs.
- Environment includes noise and work with moving objects and vehicles.
- Essential Physical Abilities
- Sufficient ability to regularly required to stand, walk, and occasionally sit; occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and use hands to finger, handle, or feel; must be able to operate assigned equipment and vehicles.
- Sufficient body flexibility and balance to perform maintenance and repair operations requiring climbing and working on ladders and power lifts; including lifting and strength to regularly required to lift up to 25 pounds; frequently required to lift up to 50 pounds; occasionally required to lift up to 100 pounds.
- Sufficient vision requirements including close vision; clarity of hearing, with or without reasonable accommodation, to discern verbal instructions and alarm/warning systems, including backup alarms; visual acuity, with or without reasonable accommodation, to comprehend written work instructions and work orders.
- Sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, to operate a variety of power and hand tools and make adjustments to equipment.
