Shawnee hires new city manager — Shawnee has appointed Paul Kramer as its new city manager. Kramer comes from Leavenworth, where he served more than 14 years, including eight as the top administrative official.

 

Unified Government of Wyandotte County names new CFO — Shelley Kneuvean returns to local government as the new chief financial officer for the Unified Government of Wyandotte County. Kneuvean previously served as CFO at Kansas City Kansas Community College and spent seven years with Jackson County.

 

Grandview road project recognized as 2023 Crown Community — Grandview has been recognized as a 2023 Crown Community by “American City & County” magazine. The crown communities represent exemplary projects in roadways, transportation safety, economic development, public safety response, parks and recreation, wastewater and resource recovery, and healthcare. Roeland Park installs “Community Growth” sculpture — Roeland Park installed a new sculpture, titled “Origin,” by local artist Nathan Pierce, illustrating the city’s development and community growth. Learn more.

 

Olathe announces new park — Olathe will soon begin construction on Pioneer Park, a 16.7-acre neighborhood park featuring a shelter, pond, walking trails, a playground and natural areas. The expected completion date for the park is the summer of 2025. Read more.

 

Gladstone engages students in stormwater education — While stormwater education may not top the educational bucket list of most students, Gladstone found a way to make the topic engaging. With the help of a watershed model, North Kansas City School District students learned about the effects of water pollution.

MetroKCGovJobs.com offers free job postings —  MetroKCGovJobs is now offering free job postings to local governments. The site’s purpose is to create a centralized location for public sector jobs in the area, making it easier for individuals seeking government employment to find opportunities.

 

Manager Mentorship program open for applications — Mentorships are vital in city management and MARC’s 18-month program is designed to support the development of emerging local government professionals. If you would like to serve as a mentor/mentee, or know somebody who would benefit from this program, learn more about it. The deadline for the next cohort is April 26.

 

Regional salary survey data entry — Registered organizations should update their data for the regional salary survey by Tuesday, April 30. An email was sent to all participants about how to use the new automated process. If your organization is interested in participating, contact Lukas Parrish.

 

April Managers Roundtable scheduled — The April Managers Roundtable will be Wednesday, April 17 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The session will focus on peer learning in a rapid-fire reflections format. Participants should come prepared to discuss one of three prompts:

  • What technology are you learning?
  • What topics are you reading and learning about?
  • How are you challenging your team to grow and change?

Participants will have a one-minute time limit. MARC will compile the examples shared and circulate a summary after the event. It will take place at Ryan Hall in North Kansas City. Register now!

Parade of Hearts private kickoff event — Last week, the Parade of Hearts circulated invitations to city and county leaders for this season’s kickoff event on Friday, April 12. All 100 heARTs will be unveiled for the first time before their public journey. This is an invitation-only event and limited tickets are available for city and county leaders. Study finds free school meals may reduce child obesity — A recent study found that free school meals, which have increased in quality since the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kid Act of 2010, may help reduce child obesity. With the expiration of federal COVID-19 waivers, many students are faced with more school lunch uncertainty. However, other programs aim to reverse this trend. Read more.
